"More importantly, the emails contain new evidence regarding the origins of COVID-19, including the possibility it leaked from a USA taxpayer funded laboratory", they wrote.

Critics of Fauci claim the contents of the now public emails prove that the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases misled people on the contentious origins of the COVID-19 virus. Fauci discussed the possibility that US funding might have helped to pay for gain-of-function studies in Wuhan. Fauci is at the head of this and really if we want to investigate this lab and we want to know how to prevent this from happening again, Fauci can not be a part of this investigation'.

Three employees at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which was conducting research into coronaviruses, were treated in hospital for their symptoms more than a month before China informed the World Health Organisation (WHO) of the spread of a new disease.

The Fauci emails have sparked fierce backlash among Republicans, specifically being critical of his comments on mask-wearing, the potential that the coronavirus leaked from a lab the US gave money to, and more.

'But in our experience with grantees, including Chinese grantees, which we have had interactions with for a very long period of time - they are very competent, trustworthy scientists, ' Fauci testified.

Their medical records could be vital evidence of whether Sars-Cov-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, came from a lab leak rather than a Wuhan food market. Scientists from the Wuhan Institute of Virology subsequently visited the cave to take samples from the bats.

"From my perspective, your comments are fearless, and coming from your trusted voice, will help dispel myths being spun around the virus's origins", Daszak's note continues.

Dr Fauci responded: "I understand".

Scalise and Comer last week demanded Clyburn and Maloney launch a "full and complete" investigation of China's role in the origins of COVID-19.

'Although the team has concluded that a laboratory leak is the least likely hypothesis, this requires further investigation, potentially with additional missions involving specialist experts, which I am ready to deploy, ' said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on March 30, when WHO's COVID-19 origins report became publicly available.

And, when actor Brad Pitt played him on the Saturday Night Live sketch comedy show, he happily told a colleague that one reviewer said Pitt "looked "exactly like me".

On Wednesday, a book by Dr. Anthony Fauci, "Expect the Unexpected: Ten Lessons on Truth, Service, and the Way Forward" appeared to have been entirely scrubbed from Amazon after being listed for pre-order, as well as from the Barnes & Noble bookstore.

A request for comment from Paul's office wasn't immediately returned.

US Senator Rand Paul, a Republican who has frequently clashed with Dr Fauci in hearings on Capitol Hill, said the emails make it "abundantly clear" the doctor is "a massive fraud".
