Reporters were not allowed in the castle for the talks, though they heard the queen and the president engaged in polite conversation as they walked into Windsor.

The monarch, attired in a bright pink floral outfit, had warmly greeted Biden and his wife Jill in the Quadrangle of the castle, home to the royal family for almost 1,000 years, where they were treated to a taste of British pomp.

Following the visit to Windsor, the first lady returns to Washington, D.C. The president travels on to Brussels for two days of meetings with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and European Commission leaders, and then to Geneva, where he'll conclude his weeklong trip with a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The queen has stoically continued with her official duties since then and met Biden alongside other world leaders and their spouses on Friday at the G-7 summit, by the seaside in Cornwall, southwest England. Biden wore his usual aviator sunglasses as he spoke with the British monarch but took them off when it was time to inspect the Grenadier Guardsmen.

The visit included a Guard of Honour and afternoon tea with the monarch.

Crowds gathered in Windsor Great Park to watch the spectacle, as the various regiments marched down the Long Walk and through the King George IV gate.

The queen first met a serving US president, Harry Truman, as Princess Elizabeth in 1951.

Biden, who first met the queen in 1982 as a Democratic senator for DE, said following the meeting that she was "extremely gracious" and that she reminded him of his mother in terms of "the look of her and the generosity". They chatted for a short time and then stood at a social distance for the United States national anthem before the president walked back on to the parade ground to inspect The Queen's Company First Battalion Grenadier Guards.

Biden first met Elizabeth in 1982 when he was a senator, according to the White House. Biden's first time meeting the queen came in November 1982, when as a U.S. senator he travelled to the United Kingdom for a meeting of the British-American Parliamentary Group, the White House said Sunday.

"She was very generous", Biden said.

Queen Elizabeth II even went horseback riding with President Ronald Reagan, when in 1982 he became the first US president to stay overnight at Windsor Castle.

Their latest meeting comes the day after the Queen received her official birthday gift from the nation's armed forces - a ceremony of pomp and pageantry in her honour - which was held at the castle.

During her 69 years on the throne, there have been 14 U.S. presidents. It is also the first time she has attended the ceremony since Prince Philip died, although she appeared without him by her side at the event in 2019 and 2020.

As they left the dais, Biden offered the queen an elbow.

In 2008, when then USA president George W Bush met with the monarch at Windsor, he enjoyed a traditional English afternoon spread of tea, small sandwiches and cakes in the White Drawing Room.
