India's overall tally of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2,91,83,121 with 11,67,952 active cases and 3,59,676 deaths so far. However, most of the 3,951 deaths happened during the second wave of the pandemic this year.

Bihar's Covid death tally rose by 3,971 to 9,429 deaths, up 71 per cent compared to Wednesday, after the Patna High Court flagged the irregularities in registering the deaths due to Covid.

Data revisions throughout the pandemic are relatively common, with places from the United States to Spain, China and Turkey adjusting their numbers for reasons such as lags in hospital reporting and people dying at home before a Covid-19 diagnosis was made.

The Bihar government had announced ₹4 lakh compensation to the next kin of the deceased of COVID-19 victims.

Patna district bore the brunt of the outbreak, accounting for a total of 2,303 deaths. Patna alone accounted for 2,303 Covid deaths - an addition of 1,070 to the earlier figure of 1,229.

The health department has also revised the number of recovered persons from 7,01,234 on the previous day to 6,98,397.

"Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research", the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation. "The audit was important to assess the ground reality of Covid fatalities in transparent manner to pay ex gratia of Rs4 lakh to each victim's family". He also said during the surge of second wave, there were reports of unregistered Covid deaths in private hospitals and unfortunate deaths of patients on way to hospitals. The department formed a three-member team in all medical college and hospitals and at district level. Sheohar district reported a minimum of 35 Covid deaths. Amrit said departmental action would be taken against such people (officers) who failed to provide the Covid death data on time.

Nonetheless, the state seemed to be doing well after more than a month of lockdown as, according to the health department, only 20 deaths and 589 fresh cases were reported on the day.

Amid a shortage in supply, the central government has said that it is in discussion with American pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Moderna over their Covid-19 vaccines.
