81 new COVID-19 cases in Sask.; 1 death

Saskatchewan reported 65 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the province's total to 47,941 cases throughout the pandemic. There are fewer than one thousand active cases in the province for the third day in a row as the government reported 899 active cases Friday.

The Centre has provided more than 26 crore Covid vaccine doses to states and UTs so far, the ministry of health and family welfare said on Sunday.

There are 104 people in hospital.

There is one new death to report today in the 80-plus age group from the Saskatoon zone. Another 372 doses give are awaiting confirmation of residence.

Sixty-nine per cent of those 18 and up and 67 per cent of those 12 and up have now received their first dose.

Seventy per cent of all adult residents have to have their first shot by June 20 in order to make the mid-July reopening possible.

Parents and caregivers are being notified of this and the SHA recommends all close contact get a COVID-19 test, the division said adding the affected classes will switch to online learning.

It concluded that the antibody response with a single dose of vaccine given at 3-6 months after recovery from COVID-19 may be considered at par with two doses of vaccine for individuals already infected with COVID-19. Of those 30-plus, 73 per cent have received their first dose.

A factory that the local company invested in can produce as much as 200 million doses per year and is expected to start manufacturing the vaccines from the fourth quarter or the first quarter of 2022, the health ministry said. "This will significantly help at a time when there's a shortage of vaccines in the country and more people can be covered using the saved doses".

Moderna Inc and Pfizer Inc deploy the mRNA technology in their vaccines.

There are 36 active cases of COVID-19 in Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) communities.

The 14,849 doses of COVID-19 vaccine reported Sunday were administered to residents living in the following zones: far north west (188), far north central (1), far north east (97), north west (712), north central (1,255), north east (474), Saskatoon (3,206), central west (356), central east (1,696), Regina (3,464), south west (464), south central (1,587) and south east (1,065).

To date, 11,504 cases of variants of concern have been identified by screening in Saskatchewan.
