A United Kingdom report found that the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines are only 33% effective against the Indian variant after the first dose.

"There is a small connection of thrombosis in women under 40 with the AstraZeneca vaccine", Panagiotopoulou said, but health experts in Cyprus stopped short of pointing to a medical mechanism or health factor that could cause the rare blood clot.

The AstraZeneca vaccine booking for adults aged 18 and above was made available via https://vaksincovid.gov.my for residents in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Sarawak and Selangor on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Our study shows that the much more common ischaemic stroke, due to arterial thrombosis blocking blood flow to part of the brain, may also be a presenting feature of vaccine-induced thrombosis", he said.

The country received 132,000 doses of the Oxford/Astrazeneca vaccine in late March from Covax, the global initiative to ensure lower-income countries receive jabs, but so far has administered less than 8,000 shots.

Those who got their first AstraZeneca shots between March 10 and March 19 during a pharmacy pilot project are being prioritized as the province rushes to use a stockpile of 45,000 doses set to expire in roughly a week. "So it's not that it's a hazard to get it earlier, it's just that the data we have is that it may not be as beneficial".

Those who got their first shot of AstraZeneca between March 10 and March 19 became eligible to book their follow-up appointment on Tuesday but many have already taken to social media to complain after discovering that the pharmacy where they received their first shot is not administering second doses.

Last month, South Sudan was considering disposing 60,000 expired vaccines it received as a donation through the African telecommunications company MTN and the African Union.

A spokeswoman for the health minister said many pharmacies and doctors would reach out to patients directly, and asked people to only contact participating pharmacies listed on the province's booking website.

"Across the sea in the United Kingdom in order to tackle this concern, they have dropped their time from 12 weeks to eight weeks for the second dose of AstraZeneca", he said.

The case was one of four being investigated for potential correlation between the AstraZeneca vaccine and the formation of blood clots.

Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe confirmed the news during the province's bi-weekly update on its COVID-19 response Tuesday.

"There's a plan to deliver back 72,000 doses to Covax", Angelo Goup Thon, the head of Covid-19 operations at the health ministry, told AFP.

"I understand there's a bit of confusion there", Williams said. "We took the advice that the best vaccine is the first one you're offered and we're more than happy to take the AstraZeneca, but now I feel we might fall through a crack here".
