The Centers for Disease Control and Protection on Thursday announced that they were updating their guidelines, and people who were fully vaccinated no longer needed to wear masks indoors and out, under most circumstances.

Almost 47 per cent of the United States population has received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine, and cases have dropped to their lowest level since September, at an average of about 35,000 a day.

"That's why the CDC and others are still requiring those in healthcare facilities to wear masks", he said. People will also have to follow other requirements and rules set by the federal and local governments.

That means masks still are required in NY state when a person can't maintain six feet of social distance - even outside and even if the person is vaccinated. And many stores and other businesses can still require face coverings if they want.

'All of the real world data we've seen that's been in the published literature - large studies in many different settings - have demonstrated that those vaccines are effective, ' Walensky said. Walgreens and CVS said they are reviewing their rules in light of the CDC's new guidelines, while Publix is "awaiting additional guidance before implementing potential changes", a spokesperson told Business Insider.

"It seems like a lot of change all at once", Piltch-Loeb said.

In Detroit, a fully vaccinated Christoph Cunningham, 28, wore a mask as he rode an electric scooter to a bar for lunch and said he agrees with the relaxed new guidelines.

"The person who is not wearing a mask will say, 'My president just told me that the CDC just issued guidance and I've been vaccinated and I'm not going to wear a mask, '" he said.

Why lift the mask mandate now?

"We don't know what vaccine effectiveness will look like if we drop recommendations of mask wearing and social distancing..."

"We're frankly not there yet", New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said.

"While we all share the desire to return to a mask-free normal, [the CDC] guidance is confusing and fails to consider how it will impact essential workers who face frequent exposure to individuals who are not vaccinated and refuse to wear masks", Marc Perrone, the UFCW's global president, said in a statement.

According to the memo, the National Football League expects additional modifications to come that will reflect "the greatly reduced risk of viral infection and transmission in fully vaccinated individuals". "We are close and getting closer".

Dr. Jay Wolfson, a public health expert at the University of South Florida, said the shift comes after the CDC had lost a great "a great deal of credibility" in the public's perception throughout the pandemic, in part because the agency's guidance was often overly cautious.

"The CDC has had a blow to their credibility over the past year", Piltch-Loeb said.
