Back in the US, a gunman shot and killed six people at a birthday party in Colorado Springs on Sunday.

Children at the scene appear to have been spared and were placed with relatives, the statement released by police and city officials said.

"Upon arrival, officers located six deceased adults and one adult male with serious injuries who was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries", a police statement said. Several kids were at the party but unharmed.

"We are still investigating to determine a motive".

"As the chief of police, as a husband, as a father, as a grandfather, as a member of this community, my heart breaks for the families who have lost someone they love and for the children who have lost their parents", Police Chief Vince Niski said in the statement.

Some time after midnight, he received a call from the son of one of the women at the party, who was crying on the phone. The gunman, who was reportedly in a relationship with one of the female victims, also shot and killed himself.

Neighbor Yenifer Reyes told The Denver Post she woke to the sound of many gunshots.

"Then I started hearing sirens", she added. She said because of the shooting, she will be moving out of the neighborhood as soon as possible.

The massacre took place about 110 km (70 miles) south of Denver and is the latest in a resurgence of mass shootings in the United States after such incidents seemed to recede during the height of coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

One of the dead is the suspect in the shooting.

The mobile home park, which is just west of the Colorado Springs Airport and about six miles southeast of the city's downtown, has a pool, a playground and almost 500 mobile home lots. That gunman is serving a life sentence.

What next for gun reform in the US?

The recent shootings have revived the gun control debate, with Democratic President Joe Biden calling them a "national embarrassment" and calling for new legislation from Congress.

The names of the victims and the shooter are being withheld until they have been identified by the coroner.
