As many as 25 people were sent to area hospitals with injuries.

The shooting took place early Sunday morning in front of a billiards hall in a mall near Miami Gardens to the northwest of the city center.

Three assailants reportedly got out of the SUV and indiscriminately opened fire with rifles and handguns at the crowd outside the banquet hall, which had been rented out for a concert.

Two people were shot dead at the scene, and between 20-25 people were wounded.

"It is very hard to stop a small amount of individuals who want to go out there and commit murder, and it takes all of us to stop this", Ramirez said.

Investigators were hunting for the suspects who returned to their vehicle and fled the scene after the incident, police added.

Florida remains marked by the 2016 shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, in which a gunman killed 49 people and wounded at least 68 others.

Police station chief Alfredo Ramirez condemned, in a tweet, "a cowardly act of violence with weapons". "This is targeted, this is definitely not random".

There were at least 200 mass shootings in the country in the first 132 days of this year, a report by the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group, said. Sunday's shooting is the second significant gun attack in the area over Memorial Day weekend.

On Wednesday, a public transit worker shot dead nine people at a California rail yard before turning his gun on himself as police arrived.

The Miami-Dade Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooters or their whereabouts to contact authorities.

President Joe Biden last month branded USA gun violence an "epidemic" and an "international embarrassment".

There were more than 43,000 gun-related deaths in the United States previous year, including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
