The woman, Lindsay Nielsen, is just one of several people who have come forward with allegations that the NY governor bullied and attempted to intimidate them. "The work product will be exclusively controlled by that independent lawyer personally selected by the attorney general and chief judge", Garvey said in the statement.

"Lindsey Boylan and Charlotte Bennett's detailed accounts of sexual harassment by Gov. Cuomo are extremely serious and painful to read", U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said on Twitter Sunday.

Attorney General Letitia James received a letter Monday from Cuomo's office authorizing her to take charge of the probe after a weekend of wrangling over who should investigate.

Cuomo's legal counsel said the governor would back a plan to appoint an outside lawyer as a special independent deputy attorney general.

Especially during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Cuomo was a frequent guest on his brother's show, where they would joke around together about calling their mom and memorably performed a playful comedy sketch with a giant test swab at the same time the governor's office was underreporting nursing home deaths.

"When she came to me and opened up about being a sexual assault survivor and how it shaped her and her ongoing efforts to create an organization that empowered her voice to help other survivors, I tried to be supportive and helpful", Cuomo said in a statement, which was issued to the Times.

Mr Cuomo, 63, who has been governor for more than a decade, has found himself under pressure on several fronts in recent weeks.

In that same conversation, which occurred months into the state's lockdown, Bennett says Cuomo told her he was lonely and missed hugging people.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and other elected officials have said that while Cuomo is under investigation, he should cede emergency powers he's held since the pandemic began, almost a year ago. She previously made allegations that Cuomo touched her and forcibly kissed her on the lips.

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, both Democrats, said they wanted the attorney general to handle the investigation.

"I ask all New Yorkers to await the findings of the review so that they know the facts before making any judgements", Cuomo said, adding he would have no further comment until the probe is over.

He has denied Boylan's allegations.

Lindsey Boylan attends an event in New York City in June 2019.

"A truly independent investigation into the allegations made by Ms. Bennett, Ms. Boylan, and any forthcoming survivors should take place -- but the Governor's influence touches all entities in NY that might review his conduct".

Local Republican lawmakers also reiterated calls to investigate the governor. In addition to credible accusations of sexual harassment, Cuomo faces federal probes into whether he hid the covid-19 death toll in NY nursing homes, and fresh attention to his abusive leadership style. McDaniel said, noting that Biden past year described Cuomo as the "gold standard" for his leadership through the pandemic.

"I don't see how we as a Legislature can make effective policy when, if you don't go along with what the governor says, you get threatened or aren't given accurate information", Steck said.

On Sunday, James noted her office expects to receive a referral with subpoena power to investigate the claims. He was abusing his power over her for sex.

And on Monday, President Biden, a longtime Cuomo ally, declined to stand behind the embattled governor.

A former journalist said recently that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and his administration bullied and attempted to intimidate her, according to the New York Post.

"The Governor's proposal to appoint someone who is not independently elected, has no subpoena authority and no prosecutorial authority is inadequate".
