The statement added: "He is now awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room".

Authorities say an ambulance took Woods to a hospital in serious condition. Those injuries were stabilized with a rod in the tibia. Doctors also performed surgery on his leg muscles to reduce swelling from the accident.

Donnie Nelson, a resident of Rolling Hills, said that stretch of Hawthorne is the site of risky accidents once or twice a year.

Woods was in California for a two-day video shoot with content partner Golf Digest.

Villanueva said the department is considering it an accident, which could lead to a misdemeanor at most. "The golf world will rally around him, the sporting world has rallied around him, the world will rally around him". His 2019 Masters victory was seen as a transcendent comeback and further cemented his reputation for toughness and clutch performances. "Painkillers have become a part of his life". "The front end was totally destroyed, the bumpers, everything totally destroyed. I just hope he's all right".

Nelson said he knows at least one person who was seriously injured by a garbage truck on the hill. "Please join us in wishing Tiger a successful surgery and all the best for a full recovery".

Woods, considered one of the greatest athletes in the history of his sport, had hosted the annual Genesis Invitational at the Riviera Country Club over the weekend. He was not playing while recovering from a fifth back surgery on December 23.

"Thankfully the interior was more or less intact, which kind of gave him the cushion to survive what otherwise would have been a fatal crash", Villanueva said. They didn't say how fast he was driving.

Carlos Gonzalez is with the sheriff's department.

Woods has always been superhuman on the golf course, but the last few years - the 2019 Masters aside - have shown him to be as human as the rest of us. But he had struggled since the PGA Tour's return from a Covid shutdown past year. He has had four previous surgeries on his left knee, including a major reconstruction after he won the 2008 U.S. Open, and five surgeries on his back. He played with his son, Charlie, who is now 12.

The 45-year-old was "conscious and able to communicate" with emergency personnel at the scene and was taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Centre.

At the PGA Tour's World Golf Championships event in Florida, Canadian Mackenzie Hughes was on the 14th hole of his practice round with fellow Tour victor Lanto Griffin when they heard the news.

Asked if he would be at Augusta National, Woods said: "God, I hope so".

The cause of the accident remains unknown.

Woods was driving a 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV at the time of the crash Tuesday morning.

In 2009, as he backed his Cadillac SUV out of his driveway in a gated Florida community, he struck a fire hydrant and slammed into a neighbor's tree. Woods lost major corporate sponsorship, went to a rehabilitation clinic in MS and did not return to golf for five months.

"You know, Tiger back in 2017 was found by police pulled over to the side of the road, asleep in his vehicle". After the arrest, it was reported that Woods had a cocktail of painkillers in his system, some of which had been prescribed due to a back surgery that same year. Woods later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and checked into a clinic to get help with prescription medication and a sleep disorder.
