Senate Can't Vote On $15 Minimum Wage, Parliamentarian Rules

The Senate's chief parliamentarian ruled Thursday that a federal minimum wage hike should not be included in the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package, but that seemed to do little to deter House Democrats from pursuing the plan - against impossible odds. "We should have a broader discussion on it than jam it into this bill".

CNN previously reported that the parliamentarian was "stoic" during a meeting this week with Democratic aides about whether the minimum wage provision would be permissible through reconciliation and did not tip her hand one way or the other, according to a Democratic aide familiar. However, 29 states have passed measures raising their statewide minimum wage above the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour.

If MacDonough decides the minimum wage provision must come out of the relief package, it would all but kill it because on its own it lacks enough support to overcome a Republican filibuster. "That's 50 cents per year in places", he said. In January, Bryan Cutler, R-Peach Bottom and House majority leader, said the state's minimum wage is not a reflection on the wages being earned by workers in Pennsylvania. I should have, because disparities like this are front and center when disaster hits, and it's super important to have a conversation on why a push for $15 minimum wage for workers is essential in improving quality of life, while being realistic about how hard it is to get it done because those with money have the power. The polling was done between February 20 and 22 by GBAO Research Strategies with 600 respondents.

The mobile billboard read: "Hey Senator Manchin!"

"Vital members of our community, such as child care and home health workers, bank tellers, construction workers, and retail and hospitality workers, who work full-time while making the minimum wage only earn $15,080 a year", Tartaglione wrote. "We need your support to #RaisetheWage!" The current federal minimum wage for tipped employees is $2.13 per hour.

"Hey Senator Capito! 63% of West Virginians support raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025". This support level grows modestly when adding the messaging that invokes West Virginia restaurant servers being mostly women who use food stamps at almost three times the rate of other workers (71% support).

"Well, they shouldn't be doing it by paying people low wages", Khanna replied.

Gov. Tom Wolf has called repeatedly for an increase in the state's minimum wage. However, two Democrats have already said they do not support including the minimum wage measure in the $1.9 trillion plan.

Frankenberry said he is encouraged by the survey data. Manchin has suggested an $11 minimum wage. "And I'll tell you that moral argument right now actually did do a lot to keep people together in terms of what Democrats promised on the campaign trail and what we now have to deliver".

This, they argue, has nothing to do with vaccine distribution nor reopening schools, the biggest issues facing America at the moment. In fact, Republicans point out, the $130 billion goes to schools whether they reopen or not and most of the money would be for improvements to school infrastructure that wouldn't be spent until 2022.
