According to The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho blocked Japhet Tanganga from leaving the North London club on transfer deadline day.

Having topped the table at the beginning of December, they have won just two of their past nine league games and are six points adrift of the four Champions League spots.

"He (Alli) needs to recover from his injury", said Mourinho at his eve of match press conference.

Alli has struggled for game time under Mourinho this season, with just 12 competitive appearances totalling 472 minutes, and one Premier League start, back in September.

"I had a good conversation with him yesterday, we spoke around this question that you ask me", Mourinho explained to reporters on Wednesday.

"It's an important season for the team".

We can understand why as well, Spurs really need to put together a run of results if they're to get their season back on track, but that's going to be hard without Reguilon and Lo Celso available.

"We need him. We need a good Dele Alli". Without all three we miss some creation, some magic around the attacking areas. "A conversation doesn't make a miracle or put him in great form but I believe the conversation was the extra motivation that he needs to get back as soon as possible".

"I think when he's physically ready he'll be in a good frame of mind".

Mourinho has now confirmed that he and the player had a personal meeting on Tuesday afternoon in which they found "common ground".

"I think it's not a very optimistic thing to say next week he should be playing, it will be just a effect of his good evolution".

"He is happy with the progress; of course we are happy too", he added.

According to WhoScored, Tanganga has played thrice in the Europa League, and twice each in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup for Spurs so far this season.

'I have no doubts he is one of the best managers in the world and has created a squad at Tottenham that is always competitive, very strong.
