"Wearing a cloth mask over a surgical mask increased protection for the person wearing the masks, blocking 83% of small particles". A fitted cloth mask can act as a cinch and secures the loose medical mask in place.

The report says that two people both wearing a cloth mask over a surgical mask reduces exposure to particles carrying the novel coronavirus by more than 95%, a result also achieved by knotting a surgical mask tightly enough that it is flush with the wearer's face. Is it time to wear 2 masks? Here's what local experts and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are saying

Last month, LifeSiteNews covered a CNBC segment in which anchor Shepard Smith and colleague Contessa Brewer agree that, in Smith's words, "it's time to double up and wear two", with Brewer going so far as to suggest wearing three at a time.

Marcellino said the current recommendation at Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health was that masks should have at least two layers, completely cover one's nose and mouth and fit snugly on one's nose and the side of the face. If a mask has too many layers and is hard to breathe through, then people will likely suck air in from the sides of the mask, which will defeat the goal of wearing one, she said. Wearers should ensure a tight fit by cupping their hands on the outside edges of the mask to check for gaps.

Local reaction concerning the Centers for Disease Control's new suggestion to wear two masks is mixed.

A family walks wearing masks in Downtown Los Angeles on March 22, 2020, during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

For instructions on how to knot and tuck the ear loops of a medical procedure mask in order to improve the fit, the CDC linked to a YouTube video by UNC Health titled "Pro Tip to help your Earloop Mask Fit More Tightly". They are also still in short supply in many areas of the United States. "And now these variants are circulating... whatever we can do to improve the fit of a mask to make it work better, the faster we can end this pandemic".
