Lingard scores twice on West Ham debut

A lifeline has been offered to the forward by a manager he briefly worked with at Old Trafford and Lingard is set to make his Hammers debut at Aston Villa on Wednesday.

That much-needed striker didn't arrive in January for West Ham, but they did secure the services of Lingard from Manchester United on-loan. You can't do that at this level. Jesse (Lingard) is the new boy and will get the limelight but it is a team performance. "Sunday League wouldn't do that".

West Ham United boss David Moyes says Jesse Lingard can get his England place back if he plays like that for the rest of the season.

His second of the night snuffed out hopes of a Villa comeback after Ollie Watkins had scored for the third time in four matches to halve the deficit.

He played a key role when the Three Lions reached the World Cup semi-final in 2018 - featuring in six of their seven games - and Moyes believes Lingard can force his way in to Southgate's squad for the European Championships. I am never one for using that as an excuse.

"We want to bring in more Tomas Souceks, more Vladimir Coufals due to their hunger and appetite".

Emi Martinez denied Lingard from distance while Watkins hit the post during an even first half before the Hammers took control.

West Ham fans reacted on Twitter to the former Brentford's moment of second-half brilliance - many drooling over the £23,000-a-week star's (Spotrac) pass that opened the floodgates in the second 45.

"It has been a long time, I have come here to get game time and scored two goals but like I said, three points is the most important". He gave the ball away cheaply in the first half and the likes of Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek marked him out of the game easily. "I was smiling before the game and during, I just enjoy playing football".
