The winners will be announced in a ceremony on 28 February.

The nominations for the 78 annual Golden Globe awards are all over the map, and the first-ever virtual ceremony may just top that.

Hollywood's unusual and largely virtual awards season lacks the usual kind of buzz and red-carpet glamour that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association annually feasts on.

Mank, David Fincher's film about Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, leads the film nominations with six.

Colman is up for best actress in a TV drama, an award she won a year ago, for playing the Queen in The Crown, and is shortlisted again for her forthcoming film The Father. Also of note in the category: the "Hamilton" film, ineligible for the Academy Awards, is a likely nominee at the Globes. No other studio was close.

Admittedly, the nominations aren't exactly shocking considering Schitt's Creek received a record nine Emmy wins a year ago, but it's still a massive honour for a show that only truly received the worldwide acclaim it deserved in its final season.

Three of the five directors nominated on Wednesday were women, including Regina King for the story of a meeting of four Black icons in the 1960s in "One Night in Miami", Britain's Emerald Fennell for "Promising Young Woman" and Chinese-born filmmaker Chloe Zhao for "Nomadland".

Meanwhile, Cartoon Saloon has been nominated for its hit release Wolfwalkers for Best Motion Animated Picture.

"Schitt's Creek" is up for best series and Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy are all nominated in the best television series, musical or comedy categories.

The nominees for actress in a drama film are: Frances McDormand, "Nomadland"; Viola Davis, "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"; Carey Mulligan, "Promising Young Woman"; Vanessa Kirby, "Pieces of a Woman"; Andra Day, "The United States vs. Billie Holiday". The film could be nominated for best feature, comedy or musical, along with acting nods for Sacha Baron Cohen (also a contender for his supporting performance in "The Trial of the Chicago 7") and Maria Bakalova.

The Queen's Gambit on Netflix, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a gifted chess player who fights drug and alcohol addiction, will compete in the limited series category against HBO's The Undoing, Netflix's Unorthodox and others. Presenters Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson read nominees not from a teleprompter but holding print-outs and streaming live from what appeared to be their homes.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association were really On One this year and awarded one of the most critically panned shows of 2020 with several awards.

This year's Globes were postponed almost two months because of the pandemic and to adjust to the delayed Oscars.

The winners will be announced at the end of the month in a bi-coastal ceremony hosted by Tina Fey in NY and Amy Poehler in Los Angeles.

The awards will be held on both of America's coasts for the first time, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association said.
