Kinzinger told the Times in an interview that he hopes to topple the "fear" tactics that Trump has used to sustain his stronghold in the party and that "does real damage to this democracy".

Former President Donald Trump released a statement on Tuesday slamming Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, saying that if the GOP sticks with McConnell and his ilk, they will lose the base that supported Trump.

North Carolina Republican Chairman Michael Whatley condemned Burr for voting against the former president, as a "shocking and disappointing" abdication of his duty to voters.

"It is truly a sad day for North Carolina Republicans", Burr said in a statement. The Senate verdict Saturday, with its 57-43 majority falling 10 votes short of the two-thirds needed to convict Trump, hardly put to rest the debate about the Republican former president's culpability for the January 6 assault.

The 25 members of the Tar Heel State GOP unanimously voted to deliver the stinging rebuke of Burr during a closed-door meeting of the group's central committee, the party said in a statement.

"President Trump is still liable for everything he did while he was in office, as an ordinary citizen, unless the statute of limitations has run", he said at the time.

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) was also unanimously censured by the Louisiana Republican Party, while Sens.

Kinzinger, a 42-year-old Air National Guard pilot, first told Business Insider about the letter last month, saying that he was surprised by the vitriol he had received in the wake of casting his vote to impeach Trump. Mike Lee for his vote to acquit the former president.

He added that the GOP must plan for the future and how, in his view, impeachments are not about the individual office holder, but about the behavior the nation wants presidents to exhibit while occupying the White House.

Two GOP senators who have taken heat for their role in advancing challenges to state-certified electoral votes, Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri, came in at 4 percent and 1 per cent, respectively.
