While the events of the shooting remain under investigation, police said it appears that a suspect shot and killed two people inside the shooting range before being confronted and shot by multiple others outside.

The gunfire comes roughly two months after a Christmas Eve shooting left two men dead in Metairie, according to the sheriff's office.

A deadly shooting occurred at a gun shop in the New Orleans metro area, "multiple" people are dead and some innocent bystanders wounded as a result of the incident, local news channel WDSU reported Saturday.

A man cries out "Where is my son?" at the scene of a multiple fatality shooting at the Jefferson Gun Outlet in Metairie, La., on February 20, 2021.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto was expected to deliver a news briefing at 5 p.m. local time. Both of those victims were later pronounced dead at the scene.

Two more people were transported to a local hospital for treatment and were in stable condition, it said.

Sources said the suspect got into an argument with a clerk who told him he should not have a loaded gun until he got inside the range, Daily Mail reported.

Lopinto said investigators are just beginning to piece together what happened.

Caution tape surrounded the business to keep onlookers from getting close to the scene, where ambulances and numerous law enforcement vehicles had arrived earlier.

Metairie is a major suburb of New Orleans, about five miles (eight kilometers) west of the city's iconic French Quarter, in neighboring Jefferson Parish.
