"EMA's human medicines committee (CHMP) has recommended updating the product information for Comirnaty to clarify that each vial contains six doses of the vaccine", EMA said.

The doses would be available to member states in the second quarter of this year.

Reuters had reported on Wednesday that the regulator was close to approving such a move.

Alejandro Cravioto, chairman of WHO's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation (SAGE), told media persons during a news briefing that two doses are needed to make the vaccine more effective.

With the Moderna vaccine, the second one now authorized in the European Union, we will have a further 160 million doses.

Early results of large, still unfinished studies show both the Moderna and the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines appear safe and strongly protective, although Moderna's is easier to handle since it doesn't need to be stored at ultra-frozen temperatures.

"This vaccine provides us with another tool to overcome the current emergency", said EMA Executive Director Emer Cooke.

Nadhim Zahawi, vaccine deployment minister, said: "The NHS is pulling out all the stops to vaccinate those most at risk as quickly as possible, with over 1,000 vaccination sites live across the United Kingdom by the end of the week to provide easy access to everyone, regardless of where they live".

The UK has already authorized those two and just added the vaccine developed by Oxford University with AstraZeneca.

COVID-19 vaccine scams are on the rise, according to European and USA government officials who are warning the public of fraudsters out for money and personal data.

"Patients should never try to secure a vaccine online - no legitimate vaccine is sold online - and only get vaccinated at certified vaccination centers or by certified healthcare providers", a Pfizer spokesman said in a statement.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's COVID-19 vaccine tracker, the USA had distributed 8.9 million doses of Pfizer's and Moderna's COVID-19 vaccines as of Monday afternoon. Authorities started vaccinations on December 19 using the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

The company is also working towards increasing the production forecast to a billion doses.

"The Moderna vaccine will be a vital boost to these efforts and will help us return to normal faster".
