The company's Snapdragon processors are so-called systems-on-chip, integrated computing modules that include not only a CPU but also more specialized circuits required by modern handsets.

Yesterday Qualcomm had launched a new Snapdragon 870 5G chipset which is also a flagship range chipset and 5G enabled as well.

The Snapdragon 870 is positioned as an upgrade iteration of Qualcomm's 2020 flagship smartphone processor, the Snapdragon 865.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 is an overclocked Snapdragon 865 Plus according to the source of the leak, Winfuture.de. The Snapdragon 865 Plus comes with a clock speed of 3.1GHz and includes Adreno 650 GPU.

What remains to be seen is what the price difference between Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 870 smartphones will be. Like the Snapdragon 865 Plus, it also supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, making it a future-proof platform for the next few years to come. The display driver can run QHD (1440p) class panels at up to 144Hz or 4K at 60 Hz. There's an external Qualcomm X55 modem, so the chipset is 5G-ready as well. When compared to the Snapdragon 865 Plus, these elements remain the same on paper. There is support for up to LPDDR5 memory with a maximum frequency of up to 2750 MHz. As for imaging, the Spectra 480 ISP is unchanged. In terms of video shooting capabilities, there is support for up to 8K capture at 30fps, along with the usual slate of features like MFNR, HEIF and HEVC capture, and more. This makes the CPU on the Snapdragon 870 SoC the fastest till date. And, it provisions a USB Type-C (3.1) port with QuickCharge 4+ charging technology.

The Motorola Edge S is expected to be a rebranded version of it.

Devices with the Snapdragon 870 are going to be announced in the first quarter of this year, coming from companies including Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi.
