As the days went by and all of the footage from the Capitol building was viewed and disseminated on social media, Goodman's valor caught a lot of people's attention.

Video and pictures show an officer, later identified by CNN reporter Kristin Wilson as Eugene Goodman, standing in the doorway outside the Senate chamber where lawmakers were.

He was armed with only a baton at the time.

Eugene Goodman is being lauded a "hero" after the US Capitol police officer steered a growing mob of violent insurrectionists away from the door that led to members of Congress while simultaneously putting himself in harm's way.

Supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump are confronted by Capitol Police officers outside the Senate chamber inside the Capitol building in Washington on January 6, 2021. After that, he pushes the man and the following crowd in the opposite direction of the inner hallway.

"As trump's fascist mob ransacked the US Capitol, this courageous USCP officer kept murderous rioters away from the Senate chamber and saved the lives of those inside. God bless him for his courage", US Rep. Bill Pascrell wrote in a Twitter message on Sunday.

Goodman, who is an Army veteran and a father, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. I hope @SpeakerPelosi @SenSchumer @WhipClyburn consider him for the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Per news releases from the FBI's field office in Omaha, Nebraska, and the county sheriff's office, Jensen was booked into the Polk County Jail early Saturday on five federal charges, including trespassing and disorderly conduct counts.

Goodman radioed "second floor" to other officers while rushing up the stairs as the horde followed him closely.

Riots throughout the Capitol building occurred after Trump's "stop the steal" rally on Wednesday. Steven resigned last week after the agency came under heavy scrutiny due to its inadequate and ill-prepared response to the pro-Trump rioters that staged an insurrection at the Capitol last week.
