The rear-wheel-drive 2021 Porsche Taycan will go on sale in Europe in March 2021. This variant differentiates itself through its rear-wheel-drive layout - removing the front power unit takes approximately 200 pounds of weight from the front of the vehicle. First and foremost, the model has a single electric motor that powers the rear wheels and produces up to 402 hp (300 kW / 408 PS) and 254 lb-ft (344 Nm) torque. As on other Porsche Taycan models, Porsche Surface Coated Brakes and Porsche Ceramic Coated Brakes, as well as 20- and 21-inch wheels are optional.

Customers can also opt for the Performance Plus Battery.

Porsche Taycan gets a new rear-drive model that's the most affordable by far

The base battery charges at a lower peak of 225 kw-versus 270 kw-but its smaller capacity assures the same charging time of 22.5 minutes from 5% to 80%.

For reference, the Taycan 4S, using the same battery, accelerates to 100km/h from rest in 4.0 seconds, but its range is hampered by a 98kg weight penalty.

The price gap is even wider in China, where the 4S costs 260,000 Yuan (AU$52,032.87) more than the base Taycan. That's versus the Performance Battery Plus version's 469 hp and 263 lb-ft in its launch control mode. Regardless of battery configuration, the Taycan can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in just 5.1 seconds and has a top track speed of 143 miles per hour. They cover the same standard 14.1-inch brake discs (an upgrade to 16-inch front items is available) and six-piston front, four-piston rear brake calipers, though they're black here rather than red on the 4S. The larger pack gets the Taycan through a quarter-mile two-tenths quicker, at 13.5 seconds. The first deliveries are expected in the Spring, according to Autoblog, so it shouldn't be too long before you can head out and - in an extremely safe and controlled manner - hit the brakes and pretend that you're able to match the car's Guinness World Record drift.

Broadly the Taycan is otherwise identical to the Taycan 4S. With a coefficient of drag of just 0.24, it remains the most aerodynamically efficient production Porsche (when equipped with the optional air suspension the figure drops to 0.22).

On Tuesday the German automaker announced the 2021 Porsche Taycan rear-wheel-drive base model joins the US lineup and costs $81,250 including destination.

When battery is low, drivers will be thankful for the Taycan's quick charging technology. And of course there are loads of options and colors to choose from. Taycan buyers will be able to track the progress of their vehicle from their smartphone, from build to delivery, through the Porsche Track Your Dream service, also available for the 911.
