In a second blow Friday to Trump's election interference efforts, Georgia became the first of those states to formally certify its results, affirming that Biden won in the southern state by 12,670 votes, or 0.26 percent out of some five million ballots cast. Ms McEnany also said that media outlets had accused Mr Trump of having colluded with Russian Federation, an allegation that a major justice department inquiry found no evidence to support. Instead he said the law requires him to "formalize the certification, which paves the way for the Trump campaign to pursue other legal options and a separate recount if they choose".

The Republican governor hasn't stepped forward to defend the integrity of this year's elections amid attacks by Trump and other members of his own party, who claim without evidence that the presidential vote in Georgia was tainted by fraud. Kemp has neither endorsed Trump's fraud claims nor backed Raffensperger, a fellow Republican, in his assertion that the election was conducted fairly.

It came amid mounting criticism that Trump's efforts to subvert the results of the 2020 election could do long-lasting damage to democratic traditions.

Following a by-hand recount, US President-elect Biden's narrow victory in Georgia was officially certified on Friday by the Republican official who oversaw the audit. Mr. Kemp said the audit did not get into the signature matching issue.

Following these comments, Trump shared a news article quoting a tweet of his from 2012 in which he commented on reports of "voting machines switching Romney votes to Obama". At the time, he insisted that Georgia's laws "prevent elections from being stolen from anyone".

The state is set to certify the results Monday.

"Working as an engineer throughout my life, I live by the motto that numbers don't lie. We saw this from the Democrats in 2018 and we see this from Republicans today", Mr. Raffensperger said.

Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger had requested that Brady step down earlier, in the wake of two incidents in Floyd County, with local officials meeting to discuss the decision before firing the clerk, the outlet reported.

Raffensperger's office stumbled earlier in the day when it prematurely announced the certification while it was still unfinished. The momentary slip was yet another moment of drama in a race that has been full of it.

Kemp was cited by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution it was "completely unacceptable" that thousands of uncounted ballots were found in several counties during the manual hand recount in the wake of the initial results.

"We have not yet been made aware of any information that would change the outcome of the election in MI and as legislative leaders, we will follow the law and follow the normal process regarding Michigan's electors, just as we have said throughout this election", they said.

"These measures will improve the security of our elections, and that should lead to greater public trust", he said. He acknowledged their feelings on Friday.

Mr. Biden holds a projected 306-232 lead over the president in Electoral College votes, which includes Georgia's 16 electoral votes.

But he is already doing a lot of damage to the democratic process along the way, and seeding unfounded distrust in the election results among core parts of his base that could persist for years.

"People feel their side was cheated".

Several counties in Georgia continued to count ballots even as news outlets have declared Joe Biden the victor of the race for President.
