"We know, from lots of good public health science, that raising the price of commercial tobacco products is one of the most effective ways to support people quitting", McKone said.

The third annual State of Lung Cancer report by the American Lung Association is out.

The survival rate in California s 22.9%.

Arizona was in the bottom tier in three of six categories in a new American Lung Association report, which put the state dead-last for the number of patients who receive treatment after getting a diagnosis of lung cancer. That's more deaths than for any other type of cancer, including breast cancer, even though more people are stricken annually with breast cancer.

This year's report highlights the positive trend of increased lung cancer survival, as the nationwide five-year lung cancer survival rate of 22.6% reflects a 13% improvement over the past five years.

Survival: Lung cancer has one of the lowest five-year survival rates because cases are often diagnosed at later stages when it is less likely to be curable.

"With the precise treatment of lung cancer, more useful therapies are and will be introduced on patients to save their life and improve their quality of life", Zhong said. "Minnesota is above average in that and for survival, we're actually second in the country".

"Lung cancer screening is a powerful tool to save lives", Costa said in the press release.

Lung cancer screening is recommended annually for people who have a history of heaving smoking, which is defined as a pack a day for 30 years or more or two packs a day for 15 years.
