It is believed that no church services were being conducted at the time of the stabbing.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said two people died from their injuries, KRON4 reported.

The church is on E San Fernando St near the San Jose State University Campus.

According to the church's website, the church "serves a very eclectic group of people".

A couple hours after announcing the attack on Twitter Sunday, the San Jose Police Department tweeted a thank-you to firefighters and first-responding officers "who rendered aid to victims in the middle of a chaotic scene and undoubtedly saved lives". When they arrived, they found five victims suffering from at least one stab wound each.

The suspect has been arrested.

The church is used as a homeless shelter and was not holding religious services at the time, police said.

Those injured had been both inside and outside the church, which acts as an overnight shelter for the homeless, the station said. "Unhoused individuals were brought into the church to get them out of the cold". Several more people are receiving treatment for serious injuries. I never thought that this would be part of the deal, but things go sideways and we can't let that dissuade us. He, however, later deleted the tweet, saying that information on the status of the incident would be forthcoming from the San Jose Police Department.
