At the same time, the pandemic has raised questions about what our employees can expect in the future, so we provided some guidance this week to employees on our thinking about work flexibility.

Employees will have the option of working from home, subject to approval from their managers, and in exchange will give up their office space at the company according to The Verge.

While the new guidance already opens the doors to more flexibility for most Microsoft workers, the company plans to continue to evolve its approach to flexibility over time as it "learns more". However, not every employee can completely work from home without visiting the office as some of their job scopes still require them to use the company's facilities like hardware labs or data centers. The company has unveiled the "hybrid workplace" guidance internally to allow for greater flexibility once the USA offices eventually reopen in January 2021 at the earliest.

Software giant Microsoft will let employees work from home permanently if they choose to, USA media reported on Friday, becoming the latest employer to expand work-from-home provisions prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Not everyone will be able to take advantage of their work-from-home option, however, as some roles will require them to remain in the office.

"Moving forward, it is our goal to offer as much flexibility as possible to support individual workstyles, while balancing business needs and ensuring we live our culture", said Kathleen Hogan, Microsoft's chief people officer, in a blog post.

The employees will have to relinquish their work desks if they choose to work from home after the office opens for regular work.

Spotify followed Twitter and Facebook's lead to allow staffers to work from home until the end of the year.

Amazon initially told its corporate employees who can work from home that they will be allowed to continue to do so until at least October 2.

The employees were asked to return its new Silicon Valley campus, which cost billions of dollars to build, because of hardware-development processes required them to work from the office, according to Bloomberg.

Like Facebook, Microsoft employees who opt to work remotely will have their pay adjusted depending on what part of the country they live in.

At The Wall Street Journal CEO Council on Tuesday, Nadella said that online meetings can make employees exhausted, according to Republic World.

In a bid to address it, the company launched the "virtual commute" to aid employees transition from work to home life.
