There was a brief stumble with a bogey five on the par-four second, McDonald's 11th hole, but the 28-year-old from MS recovered to pick up her fifth birdie on the par-five seventh.

"When I started making a couple bogeys she was making birdies, and so I knew she was getting close to me".

"I'm really happy with how I played, " McDonald said. You have to miss it in the right spot, and I feel like I missed it in the wrong spot a few times.

"I just gave myself better numbers, and with the wind it's kind of tough to get yourself exactly the numbers that you like".

The world No. 2, fresh off her maiden Major win at last month's Women's PGA Championship, made four straight birdies to reach 14-under 196 at the Pelican Golf Club, with American McDonald, in second, carding a 68.

A birdie at the first was offset by a rare bogey at the next, although Kim atoned at the sixth as Ally McDonald hit back from an early blemish with a run of three birdies in four holes that merely trimmed the deficit to four shots. Honestly, probably didnt see that many birdies on my front.

"I wasn't really getting anything out there on the front nine but definitely nice to finish strong on the back", Ko said. She finished at 14-under-par 266 to set the 72-hole scoring record for the tournament.

Popov had lit up the course on Thursday with a six-under-par 66 when she pocketed six birdies on the front nine alone. "But we had a lot of the same numbers today, so I was able to capitalize and I made some really long putts, too, which obviously always helps".

Lydia Ko (69) and Austin Ernst ( 68) were 8 under, and Brooke Henderson (69) was another stroke back with Jessica Korda (64), Angela Stanford (65) and Jennifer Song (65).

She was 10 strokes adrift current leader Sei Young Kim of South Korea, but still in contention.

She skipped her title defence at the pandemic-delayed ANA Inspiration in September, and is returning to the LPGA tour for the first time in nearly a year.
