Maradona, who captained the 1986 team, died on Wednesday from a heart attack at the age of 60.

Maradona was discharged from hospital a fortnight ago following brain surgery, having undergone a routine operation for a subdural haematoma after being admitted to hospital due to concerns over anaemia and dehydration. He asked for an investigation, because something was bothering him.

The sporting world lost one of the most iconic legends in the realm of global football on Wednesday, as the great Diego Maradona passed away due to cardiac arrest.

Monuments and landmarks in the country's capital Buenos Aires were to be illuminated starting Wednesday with the colors of the Argentinian flag in his honor, with the light show to be repeated each night of mourning. "He proceeded with resuscitation; he tried with syringes of adrenaline and atropine, finally declaring the death of the victim".

The players will wear black armbands and in the 10th minute the image of Maradona, who wore the number 10, will be displayed on stadium video screens for 60 seconds.

Argentine star Lionel Messi, regarded by many as a modern-day Maradona, said he "keep (s) all the handsome moments lived with him", while Cristiano Ronaldo bid goodbye to an "eternal genius" and "unparalleled magician".

Latin American leaders joined in remembering the football icon, with the president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, recalling that Maradona experienced "his stellar moment" as a football player in Mexico.

"Maradona means a lot, not just to me but to all Neapolitans". He failed a drug test in 1991 and received a 15-month ban from the game.

Players observed a minute's silence before kick-off as pictures of Maradona appeared on the electronic scoreboards.

Napoli faced Rijeka in the Europa League on Thursday in its first game since Maradona's passing.
