Vaccine verdict due by early December: Anthony Fauci

"We will know whether a vaccine is safe and effective by the end of November, the beginning of December", Dr Fauci said on the Andrew Marr Show on Sunday.

As for yourself, 35 states in America are seeing dramatic rises in cases and, in many, hospitalizations. Everyone, you may have to attend a number of months into 2021.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has been urging Americans to use masks for months.

Critics, particularly in the Joe Biden campaign, have made an election issue of Trump's response to the pandemic, deeming it scattershot and insufficiently grounded in science.

During the debate, Trump said a vaccine would be ready "by the end of the year", although he said that wasn't a guarantee. The whole world has been putting their efforts in developing a COVID-19 vaccine and vaccine candidates are now facing skepticism by a portion of the general public as well as various elected officials.

"That could start by the end of this year, the beginning of January, February, March of next year", Fauci replied.

"When you talk about vaccinating a substantial proportion of the population, so that you can have a significant impact on the dynamics of the outbreak, that very likely will not be until the second or third quarter of the year", he added. It added at the time that "such decisions should be left to states, local governments, transportation systems, and public health leaders".

Fauci was speaking specifically about vaccine efforts in the US. There have been a huge round of vaccine conspiracy theories that still originated within the anti-vaxxer communities that have been thriving well in the given COVID-19 era. It's also inked its first purchase agreement, securing 1.5 million doses from Pfizer and BioNTech.

He said there were still areas in the USA going "in the wrong direction" with new infection numbers.

Host Chuck Todd also asked Fauci about how often he briefs Trump, to which he said: "I definitely don't have his ear as much as Scott Atlas right now".

"Unfortunately, I am sorry to see what I'm viewing from a distance, what I'm seeing in the United Kingdom. after getting hit pretty badly the way we did, you went down to a pretty low level, but now you're starting to escalate in the same manner that we are here", he added.

According to the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, the US was entering a winter surge as the number of infections has reached more than 75,000 in a single day and 800 deaths on Friday. Spain has been forced to order a state of emergency and a nationwide curfew in the hope of curbing its infection rates.
