US Elections 2020 Live Updates: Lagging in polls, Trump uses debate to defend himself

Current polls show Trump trailing in most national polls by a 6 to 10 percent margin and trailing in three key states that he won in 2016: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and MI - though Trump did outperform poll numbers during the 2016 election. Yahoo News will also host a special broadcast at 8:50 p.m. ET to preview the debate and will air a post-debate show to provide analysis and reactions. The rule is meant to allow each candidate two minutes of uninterrupted time at the start of each segment. The first Trump-Biden debate drew 73.1 million viewers late last month, good for third most viewed of all time. In an effort to curtail interruptions, Trump and Biden will each have his microphone cut off while his rival delivers an opening two-minute answer to each of the six debate topics. The audience followed the rules exactly as laid out - they were remarkably silent throughout the 90-minute debate, and everyone appeared to be wearing masks. The segment topics will include fighting COVID-19, American families, race in America, climate change, national security and leadership.
