"We had the speed and a good vehicle".

Horner said Red Bull did not intend to give up on Albon.

Verstappen's afternoon was over in the gravel trap, but he knew it was the engine issue that was the main reason for his retirement as it put him directly into the firing line.

After what has actually been an aggravating season for the Thai chauffeur already, he lastly provided a podium surface at the Tuscan Grand Prix with a well-judged drive to 3rd.

Verstappen, Red Bull's number one driver, warned Gasly that returning was a bad idea.

The race got back underway for a third time, and Ricciardo briefly found himself in second place after shooting past Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas from the standing start.

The difference between Red Bull's Nos.

The Thai driver was made to work hard for his result, with late moves needed to move up from fifth to third, with his late race pass on Daniel Ricciardo around the outside of turn one bringing him into the podium places.

"We'll see with the race pace", Albon added. He was in the top three throughout practice and qualifying, beaten only by one or other (or both) of the Mercedes drivers, and must have been reasonably confident of taking at least a podium to revive his title campaign following last week's DNF.

On lap 18, Kevin Magnussen parked his Haas near the pit lane entrance after suffering a power unit failure. By the time Hamilton came in for new tyres, the pit lane entry had been closed, but the Brit champion still came in. I then dropped back into the midfield and got hit from behind.

Meanwhile, further back in the field, Hamilton muscled his way from the back to finish seventh and retained his 43-point lead in the drivers' championship.

Thai driver Alex Albon claimed his first Formula One podium on Sunday and before he had climbed from his auto thanked Red Bull for their faith in him following a tricky few weeks of speculation about his future.

For viewers used to the Mercedes-Red Bull-Ferrari combination on the podium for almost every race over the past five-six seasons, Monza provided a refreshing sight.

Gasly won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza a week ago in a shock result and his form since being demoted.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner beamed with pleasure at seeing his faith in Albon rewarded.

The question now is whether Red Bull will make a mid-season change to its line-up in its bid to challenge Mercedes - the Austrian team, after all, dropped Kvyat after just five races of 2016 for Verstappen.
