Sony Confirms There’s No Free PS5 Upgrade For PS4 Spider-Man Players

Marvel's Spider-Man is not only getting a new Miles Morales-shaped expansion when the PlayStation 5 launches this holiday season, but also a shiny new remaster that will include Peter Parker's critically-acclaimed romp through New York City.

This is disappointing to see, as Miles Morales: Ultimate Edition will retail for £69.99, meaning that in order to experience the enhanced version of 2018's Spider-Man, fans will have to cough up nearly £70.

The developers have also revealed that the original MARVEL's Spider-Man is being released on PlayStation 5 with some graphical enhancements, which players can get via the MARVEL's Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition, or by purchasing it individually from the PlayStation 5 online store; or so we initially thought. Additionally, if you buy Miles Morales for PS4, you can play the PS5 version of that game at no additional cost, and you can purchase an additional "paid-upgrade" to gain access to Spider-Man Remastered.

In the statement to Kotaku Sony highlight that those who purchase Spider-Man Miles Morales will need to use the paid-upgrade to download Spider-Man Remastered on Sony's next generation system.

Spider-Man's status as a separate remaster likely has some backend implications for how Sony's consoles handle save files. They can't even just buy it, according to Sony's statement.

Players can still play the PS4 version of Marvel's Spider-Man on their PS5 via backwards compatibility, but for all intents and purposes is an entirely new application, independent of that PS4 version.

It's been confirmed that PS5 game Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales will come bundled with a remastered version of the PS4's Marvel's Spider-Man if you purchase the "Ultimate Edition", but will you be able to buy it as a standalone game?

Marvel's Spider-Man does a spectacular job of making you feel like the ultimate Spider-Man.

Insomniac also offered some details on how the PS5 remaster is different from the PS4 version. Unfortunately, PS4 saves won't carry over to the PS5 version. If you want Spider-Man Remastered, you're going to have to buy Miles Morales at some point. Let us know down below.
