The couple has reportedly named their son after Phoenix's late older brother, actor River Phoenix, who passed away in 1993 at the age of 23 of a drug overdose.

Phoenix, 45, who won the Oscar for best actor in February for the 2019 film "Joker" (which filmed in New Jersey), is an outspoken animal rights advocate and vegan.

At the recent Zurich film festival, director Victor Kossakovsky screened his latest documentary, Gunda, which Joaquin Phoenix executive produced.

Joaquin's brother, River Phoenix, an actor known for his roles in "Stand By Me", "Running on Empty" and "My Own Private Idaho", died in October 31, 1993, when he was 23 years old, after a drug overdose at the Viper Room in West Hollywood. "His name was. a lovely son called River, so he can not promote it now" While the couple hasn't confirmed the arrival of their son, they never announced the pregnancy in the first place. It's thought that baby River was born a month ago. They started dating soon after and made their red carpet debut at the closing ceremony of Cannes Film Festival 2017.

Phoenix briefly touched on his adoration for Mara in October 2019.
