At Least 10 Dead In Building Collapse Near Mumbai, Dozens Feared Trapped

Thane (Maharashtra), Sep 21 (IANS): Ten people were killed, several injured and more than two dozen were feared trapped after a three-storey building crashed in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi, around 60 km north of Mumbai, early on Monday, officials said.

As per initial information, the locals have rescued 20 people and around 25 people are feared trapped.

Taking to Twitter he said, "Saddened by the building collapse in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra".

Besides, there were unattended problems of leakages and seepages which may have weakened the structure located in a congested locality of the town. Chief of the National Disaster Response Force said in a tweet that up to 25 people could still be trapped under the rubble. "Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to the affected", Modi said.

More than 40 emergency workers, including a team of 30 rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are at the scene.

Around 20 families were reportedly staying inside the building which was reportedly 40 years old.

Rescue personnel have pulled out a child from the debris and he has been rushed to a nearby hospital.

The cause of the collapse has not yet been named by the authorities. The Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation had twice earlier served the residents of the building a notice to vacate the property as it was in a unsafe condition.
