The balanced 10-game schedule includes five home games and five road games for each team and includes both a bye week and open week - leaving room for teams to reschedule games in case of COVID-19-relagted cancellations.

Games that can't be played on their scheduled date can be made up in teams' bye weeks or in Week 12 (Dec. 12). The Cougars will also play two Friday games, at Stanford and versus Washington, and for the first time since 2008, WSU's regular season won't end with the Apple Cup rivalry game against the Huskies.

"From the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, we have been committed to prioritizing the health and safety of our student-athletes and all those connected to our athletic programs", Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said. "We preserved the possibility of a College Football Playoff because we all have stayed in sync".

The Pac-12 has approved a 10-game, conference-only fall schedule for football to begin on September 26 with "a lot of built in flexibility", the conference announced Friday.

The schedule shift marks a drastic change from tradition. The NCAA is permitting teams to begin preseason practice 29 days before the date of their originally scheduled season-opener, which would be next week for most of the Bowl Subdivision.

A revised Pac-12 football schedule for the 2020 season was also included in the release. Managing potential competitive disadvantages in preparation was essential for the Pac-12, Stanford coach David Shaw said. Allowing specifically USC and UCLA, two Pac-12 cornerstones, to begin August 17 doesn't seem feasible at the moment.

"Everybody can start as early as August 17 but it's not my expectation that everyone will start or manage their 25 (practices) the same way", Scott said.

The Arizona State Sun Devils football season will get off to a fast start this year.
