But on Saturday, when the mask order takes effect, Justice-elect Jill Karofsky will join the court, narrowing the conservative majority to 4-3 and increasing the odds of the order surviving a legal challenge.

As a public service, Shaw Media will provide open access to information related to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) emergency.

Anyone who violates the order would be subject to a $200 fine.

Certain individuals are exempt entirely from the face covering order, including individuals under the age of five and individuals who have trouble breathing, a medical condition, intellectual or developmental disability, mental health condition, or other sensory sensitivity that prevents the individual from wearing a face covering.

Tony Evers issued an emergency order for a statewide mask mandate Thursday through a public health emergency, as cases of COVID-19 spike.

As of Friday, more than a dozen county sheriffs across Wisconsin said they would not enforce the order, with many noting they didn't have the resources to deal with it or that it was a public health issue instead of a law enforcement matter.

That ruling determined the health secretary overstepped her authority with the "safer at home" order.

Republican legislative leaders in Wisconsin brought on that lawsuit against the health secretary. While they oppose a mask mandate, they have stopped short of saying whether they would sue if Evers enacted one. "While I know emotions are high when it comes to wearing face coverings in public, my job as governor is to put people first and to do what's best for the people of our state, so that's what I am going to do".

For example, Evers added 61 of 72 counties, representing 96% of the state's population experiencing high COVID-19 activity, a dramatic increase from where Wisconsin was in June, when only 19 of 72 counties experienced high virus activity. Numerous other cities, including Green Bay, Racine, Superior and Whitewater, have followed suit.

Evers had previously said he wouldn't issue such an order.

Seven1Five Outpost, a local ice cream and tourist shop in the area, says recently, there has been a mix of people wearing masks. Democratic state Sen. Chris Larson, of Milwaukee, started a petition for a statewide mandate. Since they blocked the Governor's Badger Bonce Back plan in May, the cases of Covid-19 have been on the rise here, reaching their highest levels just this week. Wisconsin has the 28th-highest deaths in the country, and the 35th highest per capita at almost 16 deaths per 100,000 people.
