Sheffield marriage proposal causes flat fire

To do so, he lit hundreds of tea lights in their apartment, filled it with balloons and poured out wine in glasses. But after he left, the place caught on fire - completely destroying his surprise and his flat.

They then started to try and get a picture together about what caused the fire and the occupant of the flat revealed he had filled the room with hundreds of tealights to set the mood ahead of popping the question.

Three fire engines were sent to the home above a newsagents in Sheffield on Monday night.

Undeterred, the besotted waiter got down on one knee in the charred room, asked 22-year-old Ms Madevic to marry him - and she replied "yes". Valerija always says the most important thing is the small gestures every day - but I wanted to do something special for the proposal. 'I'd bought the ring so I put balloons and candles everywhere.


"I was anxious because I got messages from the locals saying "Your shop's on fire", he said. But it will always be an unforgettable day for us and an wonderful story to tell our children'.

"He pulled out a box from his pocket and I was just speechless".

"We found each other on an app and it was my first match and I immediately knew I didn't need the app anymore".

"We got on like a house on fire, but maybe we took that a bit too literally". That's right, hundreds of tea light candles!


South Yorkshire Fire had on very important message about candles: "As romantic as they are, and as much as we all love 'em, candles can be SO unsafe".

"As romantic as they are, and as much as we all love 'em, candles can be SO unsafe, please extinguish them properly when you've done; don't put them near flammable items, like curtains; don't leave 100s of tea lights unattended." the fire service warned.

However, there was some good news to come out of the disaster - she said yes! "What remains for us to say is all the best to the happy couple - we await our wedding invite!"
