"To everybody who lives in a rural area, you are not immune or protected from this virus", she said.

In related news, Nancy Pelosi told ABC News' Martha Raddatz that she has no confidence in Birx: "I think the president has been spreading disinformation about the virus and she is his appointee so, I don't have confidence there, no". However Pelosi praised another scientist on Trump's task force, Dr Anthony Fauci.

She added that sticking to health and safety guidelines, such as wearing a mask, maintaining personal hygiene and observing social distancing, was crucial. "It is extraordinarily widespread", she said.

The coronavirus, which first appeared in China, has infected 4.6 million people in the United States and killed more than 155,000 Americans, according to a Reuters tally.

During a recent meeting with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Pelosi reportedly trash talked Birx and questioned her credibility.

"Deborah Birx is the worst".

"It's not super spreading individuals, it's super spreading events and we need to stop those", Birx said, according to the network.

"She was a constant source of upbeat news for the president and his aides, walking the halls with charts emphasizing that outbreaks were gradually easing", the Times reported, describing "a critical period beginning in mid-April".

Birx rebutted that characterization on Sunday.

The President's tweet seemed to be a response to Birx's interview on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday, during which the doctor warned that the US was in "a new phase" of the virus.

Birx attributed the increased presence of the virus to "super spreading events" and said each stat needs a "dramatically tailored" approach to curbing the spread of the virus including implementing a "set of recommendations based on what we are seeing at the community level, what we are seeing relevant to the hospitals". In March she helped Trump tout a nonexistent Google site to coordinate Covid-19 testing. The White House only recently resumed daily COVID-19 briefings last month, after suspending them at the end of April. I could have brought forth the data. "And I think you said you're going to test that, too".

Birx did not speak up to contradict him.

When Sciutto asked if Pelosi's gripe with Birx is that she doesn't challenge Trump vocally enough, Pelosi reiterated her view Birx "enabled" Trump, and "there has to be some responsibility" for the administration's lack of a national strategy.

The debate, in any case, is academic. She even advised people living in multi-generational households in an area experiencing outbreaks to wear masks inside the home.
