Marvel’s Avengers faces backlash over Spider-Man PlayStation exclusive

Today, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics revealed via PlayStation Blog that Spider-Man is exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. Publisher Square Enix has not replied to a request for comment.

However, Sony announced on August 3 that Spider-Man will join the collective of champions announced so far - including Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Ms. Marvel, and Hawkeye - exclusively on PlayStation.

We don't know what he'll look like - expect a "Crystal Dynamics take on Spider-Man" with classic inspirations - but he'll "debut with an in-game event that will introduce him to the wider world of Marvel's Avengers".

Though the idea of Spider-Man coming for free on top of the base game is as sensational as the hero himself, general audiences have been critical of the wall-crawler being tied down to one platform.

Adams did not elaborate on whether Spider-Man will be a permanent or time exclusive character, and whether he will be made available to other consoles in time.

The ad came from United Kingdom retailer Base, which featured text that mentioned "Play as Spider-Man exclusively on PS4". Spider-Man is set to release at some point in 2021.

In this case, it's a bit different because the game itself isn't entirely platform exclusive. While this get is big for Sony's Playstation 4 and the upcoming Playstation 5, many fans of the Webslinger are hoping that this exclusive is only a timed, temporary exclusive.
