Biden Camp: Trump Sabotaging USPS Is Desperate Man's 'Assault On Democracy'

President Trump on Thursday attempted to soften remarks he had made hours earlier in which he appeared to confirm that he opposes Democrats' proposed boost in funding for the U.S. Postal Service because he wants to make it harder to expand voting by mail, claiming that his only goal in denying the agency funds is to ensure the integrity of the November 3 election. The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday rebuffed Republicans who challenged an agreement in Rhode Island allowing residents to vote by mail through November's general election without getting signatures from two witnesses or a notary.

A major donor to Trump and other Republicans, DeJoy is the first postmaster general in almost two decades who is not a career postal employee.

"The items are the post office and the $3.5bn for mail-in voting", he told Fox Business Network, saying Democrats want to give the post office $25bn.

The conservative Heritage Foundation found 14 cases of attempted mail fraud out of roughly 15.5 million ballots cast in OR since that state started conducting elections by mail in 1998, according to Reuters.

The speed of mail deliveries has prompted concerns that ballots and ballot applications might not arrive in a timely manner.

Under current Pennsylvania law, voters can request a mail-in ballot as late as seven days before the election. DeJoy, 63, is the first postmaster general in almost two decades who is not a career postal employee.

"But we don't agonize, we organize", Pelosi said.

He also said of mail-in voting, "Absentee good, universal mail-in very bad".

It's not just Trump that's destroying the US Post Office.

"I'm not doing this for any reason", Trump said, referring to his push to deny the agency funds.

Democrats, and a handful of Republicans, have sent DeJoy several letters asking him to reverse his changes and criticizing what they say is a lack of openness by the agency.

"Free and fair elections are the bedrock of our democracy, and they can not occur without the USPS playing its vital role", Paredes said.

"It shouldn't affect people at all", he said. It's going to be the greatest fraud in the history of elections. "The documents we requested can help provide insight as to whether the USPS is fulfilling its duty to the American people". It sought the USPS's "outreach plan" for working with state election officials and political parties to deal with the expected swell of ballots and documents focused on "preparations for handling" the workload.

"President Trump made clear today that he is intentionally sabotaging the U.S. Post Office and blocking election funding to suppress Americans' votes". "Why? It hurts his electoral chances".

When he announced the changes on August 7, DeJoy said they would "capture operating efficiencies by providing clarity and economies of scale that will allow us to reduce our cost base and capture new revenue".

Ballots were mailed on Wednesday to both the president and his wife, Melania Trump, at the Mar-a-Lago resort, which Trump lists as his legal address, according to online Palm Beach County elections records.

Statewide in-person early voting began Saturday in Florida while the state continues to grapple with a high number of coronavirus cases, highlighted by more than 8,800 fatalities and at least 550,000 known virus cases since the pandemic began.
