Oh snap, Worms is coming back? Customise your worm, take part in challenges and seasonal events and experiment with new ways to play in The Lab. Previous games have used turn-based gameplay, but Worms Rumble is going to be played out in real-time. There are also three modes for players to choose from: a classic Deathmatch mode, as well as two battle royale-style Last Worm Standing and Last Squad Standing modes.

Worms Rumble is now without a specific release date, but the development team has confirmed that the game will land on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 is PC in late 2020.

"We started prototyping Worms Rumble a couple of years ago with just a small team, and what they came up with in such a short space of time really piqued our interest and made us pretty excited for what we could do". You can check out the first trailer below, for a glimpse of a game that looks more like Super Smash Bros. than the Worms of old. If you feel like an early taste and would like to help shape the shipping product, PC users can sign up for the Worms Rumble Steam Beta which will become available from 15 July. Players will be able to level up their Worm and progress through the ranks.

The upcoming title will put a real time spin on the classic turn based combat, with 32 players clashing in the popular slapstick battles.

I enjoyed the original Worms game on the Amiga, adding humour, slick graphics, and a team-based twist to the destructible environment artillery genre popular in shareware libraries at the time.

Team17 also announced that gamers will be able to try a beta version of Worms Rumble.

If you are somehow unfamiliar with the Worms franchise, it has been around for quite a while and operates on a pretty simple premise. Further customisation options can be unlocked when you earn XP or use the in-game currency.
