WhatsApp is announcing a raft of new features today including animated stickers, the ability to use QR codes and one tap calls for large groups (up to eight people). The Facebook-owned messaging service announced new features that are expected to roll out over the next few weeks. While the news of animated stickers sound a bit bland on the surface, it could potentially also mean that we could animate personalised stickers as well. With animated stickers, WhatsApp is making its platform even more expressive for those who prefer using stickers to communicate.

WhatsApp rolled out dark mode or dark theme on Android and iOS earlier this year. "No more tapping in their digits one at a time", WhatsApp said in a statement. However, it is not yet clear if WhatsApp's dark mode will also apply to its web app, which is popularly used on desktops.

Facebook owned app added a video icon in groups with up to eight members.

WhatsApp has been working on animated stickers for a while now and had begun testing it. As a result, it is likely that for some users, it may take a while to receive the new features as an update.

In an effort to stay current, the app is pushing forward its product design, with new features to ensure anyone, anywhere, can connect. Previously, this feature was available for groups with up to four members. That should save you slowly spelling out your mobile number to new friends - instead, scanning the automatically-generated QR code will immediately add their number, name, photo, address and other details directly into your chat app. With this new update, you can focus on whoever you want by pressing and hold to maximising a participant's video to full screen. The feature will be available for all users in the weeks to come. Possibly. Adding someone's number to your phone has never been easier, quite literally.
