Globally there have been 10 million confirmed cases.

The latest data shows more than 125,000 Americans have died so far as a result of the pandemic, the highest number of known deaths of any nation.

The true death toll from the virus, which first emerged in China late a year ago, is widely believed to be significantly higher.

Florida and Arizona hit a new record of single-day COVID-19 cases on Saturday, which have caused the officials to rollback their reopening policy.

About a quarter of them have been reported in the US.

Hospitalizations of patients with the novel coronavirus in Texas reached an all-time high Monday after breaking records for almost every day the previous two weeks.

The tally eclipses the previous record a week earlier at over 183,000 cases, showing case counts continue to progress worldwide.

Should US case rises worry us?

At more than 2.4 million - roughly twice that of Brazil.

In contrast, NY and its neighbouring northeastern states, which were initially hit hardest, have reported a fall in cases and are pressing ahead with reopening plans.

During the state's peak pandemic in April, almost 800 people were dying every day.

Monday, DSHS reported 4,288 new COVID-19 cases - the first time new daily cases have dropped below 5,000 since last Monday.

While coronavirus cases are falling in the United Kingdom, they have passed 10 million worldwide.

And, according to the head of the same CDC, a recent surge in coronavirus infections is being seen in those aged between 18 and 34, many in the southern and western states of the country.

The spread of coronavirus infections has taken a "swift and very unsafe turn" in the U.S. state of Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has warned. Businesses can remain open for delivery and takeout.

The talk with Abbott was added to Pence's agenda at the last minute as the state experienced a surge in coronavirus cases, Texas Tribune reported. He said wearing masks is a "good idea" in places, where maintaining social distancing can't be done. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has since pressed pause on some parts of the state's reopening plan, including closing bars in the state.

"We are going to make sure that Texas, and your healthcare system in Texas, have the resources, have the supplies, have the personnel to meet this moment", Mr Pence said.

He urged people to wear masks, follow guidance on hygiene and to "take this seriously".

On Thursday, the number of daily new cases was at its highest at almost 6,000, reported Business Insider.

Governor Gavin Newsom has told bars to shut in seven counties, including Los Angeles, in a major rollback of efforts to restart the economy.

While some of the rise was down to more extensive testing, the rate of positive tests in some areas is also increasing.

Poland and France, meanwhile, attempted a step towards normality as they held elections that had been delayed by the virus.
