Main draw play for the Western & Southern Open will begin on August 22 followed by semi-finals on August 27.

Organisers of the ATP and WTA Western and Southern Open, typically played in Cincinnati but moved to NY this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, announced initial singles entry lists on Wednesday.

"I love both events so it was a hard decision", she said.

Six-time US Open champion Williams is the highest-profile player in the women's draw, which is missing Australia's world No.1 Ashleigh Barty and world No.2 Simona Halep.

Former champions Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal and Serena Williams have all entered next month's Western & Southern Open in NY, which will serve as a tune-up for the US Open, tournament organisers said on Wednesday.

Both Djokovic and Nadal's participation at the US Open had been considered to be very much in doubt with the rescheduled Roland-Garros looming shortly after the year's second Slam in NY.

In total, 39 of the top 53 players in the WTA rankings are set to compete, which bodes well for the US Open, and 16-year-old Coco Gauff will make her debut at the event. Nadal is the defending champion of the U.S. Open.

Patrick Mouratoglou, the long-time French coach of Serena Williams, feels the U.S. Open must not turn into a national championship for the country and says organizers need to address players' health concerns by next week.

"If there is a quarantine it will mean that players can not play Madrid and Rome", Mouratoglou said.
