Anne Bremner, a lawyer who was a friend of Letourneau's for almost 20 years, said that as she neared death Letourneau hoped that people would see her as someone who had served her time and gone on to raise two daughters with Fualaau and have a positive impact on the people around her.

"(Fualaau) knew that this was Mary's end coming, fast moving, and for her sake and the family's sake, and for his sake, he came back up and was with her, and it meant the world to her", he added. She overcame seemingly insurmountable odds with panache and humility.

She was released on parole in 1998 and was barred from contacting Fualaau, but later returned to prison to finish her seven-year-sentence after they were caught together again.

The couple married in 2005, but split in 2017, after he filed for legal separation. She was 34 and a married mother of four when the relationship began. The couple ended up explaining their forbidden attraction to each other in a 2015 interview with Barbara Walters. He quit politics in 1982 when it became public that his mistress was pregnant with his second child.

At the time of their relationship Letourneau was married with four children. But the defendants said the relationship was so freaky that no one could have predicted it. After serving 3 months of a reduced sentence in prison, she defied court orders to stay away from Fualaau, leading to her return to prison for a 7-year sentence.

The pair then married in May 2005, and would divorce in August 2019. Their relationship went from platonic to sexual in the summer of 1996 when he was one of her sixth grade students at Shorewood Elementary School in Burien, Washington.

"Likewise, the kindness and compassion of friends and others who learned of her condition along the way proved an uplifting gift to us all", it continued. In Feb. 1998, she was caught in a vehicle with Vili, just two weeks after being released from jail.

Letourneau was on the front page of every newspaper in 1997 after she was arrested and imprisoned over her sexual relationship with her 12-year-old student, Vili Fualaau.

While out on bail, Letourneau gave birth to a daughter.
