British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested in the United States on Thursday and charged with sex trafficking minors for her former boyfriend the disgraced late financier Jeffrey Epstein.

An indictment made public Thursday said Maxwell, who lived for years with Epstein and was his frequent travel companion on trips around the world, facilitated Epstein's crimes by "helping Epstein to recruit, groom, and ultimately abuse " girls as young as 14.

Epstein, a registered sex offender, was arrested last summer on new federal charges relating to the exploitation of dozens of underage girls in NY and Florida in the early 2000s.

Prosecutors also claimed Maxwell was well aware of Epstein's preference for minor girls, and that he meant to sexually abuse them.

The perjury charges relate to Maxwell claiming under oath she was unaware of anyone under 18, other than one plaintiff, she interacted with at Epstein's properties.

He did not reveal the charges against her at the time.

Federal prosecutors said in court papers she had "enticed and caused minor victims to travel to Epstein's residence in different states" and that Maxwell would assist in their "grooming for and subjection to sexual abuse".

The Associated Press says she was arrested in New Hampshire.

His charges were driven in part by the Miami Herald's Perversion of Justice series, which detailed Epstein's lenient sentence for sex charges a decade earlier.

Ghislaine Maxwell was born of mixed Czechoslovakian and French heritage, and her name hails from the latter.

She was due to appear in federal court on Thursday, sources told Reuters.

"For years, I feared Epstein and his ring", Araoz said in a statement. She has been named in multiple lawsuits by women who said they have been abused by Epstein. An indictment against Epstein filed last July charged him with sexual abuse of young girls from 2002 through 2005.

"Epstein got a crooked, sweetheart deal years ago that protected his coconspirators, like Maxwell", he said.

Court documents unsealed in August contained allegations from Virginia Giuffre, who accused Maxwell of "acting as a madam" for Epstein.

According to the indictment, Maxwell would first attempt to befriend victims prior to their abuse, asking them about their lives, schools and families.

Maxwell is facing six charges stemming from her alleged involvement in helping to procure underage girls for Epstein.

Maxwell's presence during the victims' interactions with Epstein "helped put the victims at ease", according to prosecutors, and she would sometimes massage Epstein in front of victims.

In the early 1990s, she moved to NY, where she worked selling real estate.
