When David Arquette announced he'd be returning to the Scream franchise for a fifth installment, many fans waited on pins and needles to know if his ex-wife and co-star Courteney Cox would join him.

"We can't imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney", reads the statement from Radio Silence. Along with Arquette's Dewey Riley, she's one of only a few characters to have survived the series to date, seemingly bulletproof in terms of her plot armor.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are members of the filmmaking group Radio Silence, will be directing the movie. Jamie and Guy's unbelievable script does that legacy justice and we're so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.

The first film, released in 1996, was a surprise smash upon its debut, helping to revive the horror genre for the decade and becoming the highest-grossing slasher movie of all-time until it was dethroned by last year's Halloween reboot. However, there seems to be a good chance Neve Campbell will be back in some way as perennial final girl Sidney Prescott.

While screenwriter Kevin Williamson has always been the brains behind this franchise, he's stepping into an executive producer role for this entry while James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Castle Rock) write the screenplay this time.

As of now, Arquette and Cox are the only franchise stars to be officially confirmed for Scream 5.

We'll keep you updated on Scream 5 developments as they appear.
