A long duration heat event is expected Thursday through Sunday, and potentially into early next week.

Maximum temperatures today: 32 to 35 degrees Celsius (Humidex 35 to 38).

"The combined values of temperature and humidity will give humidex values that will reach 40". "Daytime high temperatures in the low 30s with overnight lows near 20 C are expected".

"A heat dome is building from the US Midwest through the Great Lakes", said Global News Chief Meteorologist Anthony Farnell. He said less than 10 mm has fallen in the last three weeks in the city.

During hot weather, make efforts to visit neighbours, friends, and older family members frequently, especially those at higher risk, to make sure that they are cool and hydrated.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit says its warning comes as Environment Canada predicts temperatures above 30 degrees over the coming days.

The centres will open their doors at 11 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m.

"The Emergency Cooling Centres will offer a publicly accessible, air-conditioned place for residents to rest indoors and receive a cool drink", a press release said Thursday.
