Ennio Morricone worked with some of the best and most celebrated directors in the business, creating scores for many movies that are now considered influential classics.

"If proof were needed of orchestral music's enduring power and currency, imagine so numerous all-time great films without Ennio Morricone's colossal scores, giving so many of them their soul". He would first meet Leone in elementary school, though the two would not meet again for more than two decades. One of those Leone films resulted in a soundtrack dubbed "iconic" by NPR-that would be The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, starring Clint Eastwood. Morricone also composed the music for Carpenter's "The Thing".

Morricone was six times nominated for Academy Awards (Days of Heaven, The Mission, The Untouchables, Bugsy and Malèna), but - save for the honorary Oscar, awarded "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music" - he won only once, for The Hateful Eight, late in his career.

The trilogy's background music, with its coyote howl, harmonicas and eerie whistling, has since achieved cult status, being imitated or adapted in films and television programmes around the world.

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Culture, said that with his music Morricone expressed "the ineffable and invisible, which are the soul of religion".

The Washington Post tweeted a headline that paid tribute to Ennio Morricone as the man who wrote the "ah-ee-ah-ee-ah" theme to the "spaghetti" Western. "It helps me realize that I am considered as a sort of spokesperson of my epoch", he said in Ennio Morricone: In His Own Words, "and it means at the same time that some of my works have entered popular culture, even if indirectly". Maria wrote lyrics to complement her husband's pieces. They had three sons and a daughter.

In a moving text, issued after his death, Morricone thanked his family and close friends for their companionship, naming his children and grandchildren and saying: "I hope they understand how much I loved them".

Morricone's funeral will be "strictly private", Assumma said, without mentioning a date. If you need proof, here are some of my favorite tracks from his vast body of work.
