Donald Trump Asks to Delay Presidential Election

President Trump's tweet came about 15 minutes after news of the worst-ever-recorded quarterly performance of the American economy.

Voters who want to cast their absentee ballots by mail must complete and return an application to the registrar's office, but those who want to vote in person are not required to apply, Coakley said.

Can Trump delay the election? The government reported that the USA economy shrank at a dizzying 32.9 per cent annual rate in the April-June quarter, by far the worst quarterly plunge ever, as the coronavirus outbreak shut down businesses, has thrown tens of millions out of work and sent unemployment surging to 14.7 per cent.

In Florida, a key swing state in the U.S., residents have become alarmed at the rising level of coronavirus cases.

There is also no evidence that mail in voting is vulnerable to fraud.

In 2016, just five states - Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah, and Washington - conducted all-mail voting and 29 accepted no-excuse absentee voting. Election security experts have told news outlets that all forms of voter fraud are rare, including absentee balloting.

It comes as Trump's strongest attack yet on the remote voting system, which is being increasingly employed across the United States to accommodate the looming election to the coronavirus pandemic. His campaign and the Republican Party have sued to combat the practice.

President Trump on Thursday floated the possibility of delaying November's general election, in a fiery new warning about the implications of mail-in ballots.

Mr Trump told Chris Wallace during a wide-ranging interview: "I have to see".

"I was on Air Force One flying to the Great State of Texas, where I just landed". Many US states and localities are moving to use mail ballots to prevent risks of coronavirus infection.

There appears to be next-to-no appetite in the Capitol for a change to the November 3 election.

"Nothing President Trump says, does, or tweets can change that fact", he said.

Flashback: Trump called suggestions by Joe Biden that he was considering changing the date of the election "made-up propaganda" during an April press briefing. "Even beyond that, there's no accurate count!" he said. "Why would I do that?" November 3. It's a good number.

"That's the only way he thinks he can possibly win", Biden said.

Numerous president's claims about voting by mail are not accurate. However, he has not previously asked for the election to be delayed. Barr responded: "Actually, I haven't looked into that question under the Constitution".
