Ben Stokes will be a great leader: England coach

England seamers James Anderson and Ben Stokes "made the ball talk" during the first day of a warm-up contest between members of the Test squad chosen for the three-Test series against West Indies, according to batsman James Bracey.

The team's star all-rounder will not have to wait long for a chance to hone his skills, heading up one of the sides in a three-day internal squad match starting in Southampton on Wednesday.

"I think he'll do a great job".

"Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes, who has been Root's Test vice-captain since his appointment last July, will captain the side for the first time in Southampton".

Root will leave the training camp at the Ageas Bowl on Wednesday to be with his wife Carrie, who is expecting the couple´s second child later this week.

"He has a good cricket brain and, even though he does not have much captaincy experience, he will have seasoned players like James Anderson and Stuart Broad around to bounce ideas off", Wood wrote in a column for BBC.

Ben Stokes is set to captain England for the first time in Root's absence.

Silverwood is not anxious about Stokes' lack of experience as captain. "It'd be really nice to be included at some point but just keep working hard and hopefully at some point I might feature".

Commenting on Dan Lawrence, who scored a half-century (58), he said: "I played with Dan all winter, I went to India with him before Christmas and he was with the Lions in Australia". I know I'd only be taking the reins for one game because of Joe's situation.

Before the announcement, Stokes said he had never set a goal to become England captain but he was nevertheless looking forward to the opportunity.

Stokes has been preparing for this moment ever since the schedule confirmed a likely clash for Root, and declared earlier this week that he plans to be an attacking captain - in keeping with his all-action style on the field. The series is being played within a bio-secure environment with movements to and from the environment strictly regulated.
